Our Daily Altar - A Model for Morning Devotions

August 17th, 2018

Many Christians say we can't learn much from the Old Testament. That, my friend, is not true. All of the Bible is God's Word and ALL of it is important to every Christian. Paul said it this way, "16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17, bold mine). In that spirit, join the Truth Barista as he reveals how the Temple priests' morning preparations for the day's sacrificial service is a GREAT picture to guide us in our morning devotions.

Holy Spirit and Immersion? What does Immersed in the Holy Spirit Mean?

August 15th, 2018

John said of Jesus, "I have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." (Mark 1:8. So does John. Matthew and Luke add and with fire.) If baptize means to immerse, then what does it mean to be immersed/submerged/dunked in the Holy Spirit? Why is this mandatory for Jesus to do to each believer/follower of His? Is there a difference between the Baptism IN the Holy Spirit and the Baptism OF the Holy Spirit? Take a listen as Jay, the Truth Barista and Amazing Larry talk about this amazing truth!

Holy Spirit and the Kingdom of God

August 3rd, 2018

What is the mark of God's kingdom? Wherever God the King's reign is acknowledged and His will is done. Sadly, humanity threw off the yoke of God's rule in the Garden of Eden, moved into the kingdom of death and darkness, and sought to establish our own kingdoms based on following our own wills. BUT, God wants us to come back to Him. First, He opened the door to reenter His kingdom, "He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him." (Colossians 1:13-14). Then through the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us, He reestablishes His rule and reign. How do we live in God's kingdom? Take a listen!

Holy Spirit and Salvation

July 31st, 2018

How did God the Father create the universe? Through His Son, Jesus, by the power of His Spirit: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created." (John 1:1-3) and "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters." (Genesis 1:1-2) How does God recreate people who are dead in sin and separated from their Creator? The same way - through Jesus by the power of the Spirit! Join the Truth Barista and Amazing Larry as they start a new series on the Holy Spirit during their Friday Bible Study at the Ersatz Coffee Shop!

What is this Baptism Thing?

July 23rd, 2018

Why do Christian churches drip or dunk people with water? Is this something Jesus invented for His church? After all, He commanded it to be done. Churches have fought over whether it should be done for all ages or whether it can be done once or more, or dipping/dribbling/or dunking, or by anyone or just the "clergy." The Truth Barista gets to the background of baptism - FROM BEFORE JESUS(!) - and reveals what it means and how it was always done. You'll find this FASCINATING!!

Jesus Confronts Leaders - Woes Upon Them! (Matthew 23)

July 13th, 2018

It seems things never change. Solomon wrote, "there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9c). Last week Jay the Truth Barista and Amazing Larry looked at God's indictment of the leaders just before Israel and Judah's Fall (about 600 years before Jesus). In this episode, we see a nearly identical situation! The leadership has failed and God is about to act. The scary part? Are today's leaders doing the same thing? Take a listen and a moment to think!

Jesus Confronts Leaders - Lessons from Isaiah 5

July 9th, 2018

During a recent study at the Ersatz Coffee Shop, Jay the Truth Barista and Amazing Larry started looking at Jesus' rebuke of the leadership of His day - the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes. What the Truth Barista revealed was that this confrontation was not unique. In fact, God Himself (through His prophet Isaiah) had leveled similar charges against the leadership of his day some 700 years before Jesus. How little things change! Be sure you listen to this episode BEFORE you listen to the next one to get the full IMPACT of what Jesus is saying about abuse of authority!

When Is It God’s Call Or Just Narcissism? (pt 2)

June 29th, 2018

So, if you've listened to the previous episode "When Is It God's Call Or Just Narcissism? (pt 1)" how are your toes? If they weren't stepped on, that's a good sign. It means you're on the right track. YES! God has something for everybody to do in this life. Read the Bible and we find that it's Love God, Love People. We can add Live Right, Reveal the Light (Jesus). It's that simple. BUT sometimes our desire for greater significance takes us to places and pursuits God has no desire for us to grasp for. If propelled by narcissism, we can easily mistake our yearning for "personal greatness" as a "call of God." Dangerous territory, my friend. Take a listen to part 2 of this fascinating topic!

When Is It God’s Call Or Just Narcissism? (pt 1)

June 22nd, 2018

One of the BIGGEST drives in people's lives is the desire for significance. No one wants to feel insignificant. To some degree, we all want to believe we're making some sort of impact in life. But this desire is greatly amplified and twisted when coupled with narcissism. Here's your definition of NARCISSISM (American Heritage Dictionary): "A personality disorder characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-importance, need for admiration, and lack of empathy."

This is a dangerous combination in the fellowship of Jesus' followers (the church). Many "Seek God's call on their lives." Rightly so, because He has called us to a life with Him and service to others. But the search for significance often DRIVES some Christians to distraction to find out what that specific call is. Even worse, when narcissism is added to the mix, this intensified drive turns its focus from God to the person. And now we have a real problem. Take a listen and really think - is my desire for ministry out of love for Jesus or self-centered narcissism?

Which Law To Break, Jesus? (Pharisee and Tax Question)

June 15th, 2018

On the heels of our discussions of "Obeying God or Man" and "Civil Disobedience," the Truth Barista takes an intriguing look at the question of working with authorities - both God AND man - over the issue of paying taxes. Yes, Jesus' point is about our relationship with God as essential. Yes, we can also find some GREAT insights about honoring the human authorities God has placed over us. Ready to be CHALLENGED?
