The Best Laid Plans of God and Men

October 26th, 2018

"Want to hear God laugh? Tell Him your plans!" as the old Yiddish proverb goes. In spite of our best-laid plans, God's plan is always guiding us. How do we know? Besides such great Bible truths as A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps (Proverbs 16:9) and Many plans are in a person’s heart, but the Lord’s decree will prevail (Proverbs 19:21) Matthew 26:1-16 shows us four sets of plans - Jesus', the Jerusalem leaders', a woman's, and Judas' plans - all working toward God's ultimate plan of Jesus' death to bring salvation to the world. Think your life is out of control? Listen and think again!

Jesus Confronts Leaders - Woes Upon Them! (Matthew 23)

July 13th, 2018

It seems things never change. Solomon wrote, "there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9c). Last week Jay the Truth Barista and Amazing Larry looked at God's indictment of the leaders just before Israel and Judah's Fall (about 600 years before Jesus). In this episode, we see a nearly identical situation! The leadership has failed and God is about to act. The scary part? Are today's leaders doing the same thing? Take a listen and a moment to think!

Jesus Confronts Leaders - Lessons from Isaiah 5

July 9th, 2018

During a recent study at the Ersatz Coffee Shop, Jay the Truth Barista and Amazing Larry started looking at Jesus' rebuke of the leadership of His day - the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes. What the Truth Barista revealed was that this confrontation was not unique. In fact, God Himself (through His prophet Isaiah) had leveled similar charges against the leadership of his day some 700 years before Jesus. How little things change! Be sure you listen to this episode BEFORE you listen to the next one to get the full IMPACT of what Jesus is saying about abuse of authority!

Obey God or Man? (pt 1)

May 18th, 2018

Jesus promised His disciples they would experience persecution. Why? Because humanity's kingdoms instinctively clash with God's kingdom. It's a battle of wills. Whose will be done? Most of the time this world's kingdoms have no problems with Christians. But there come times when the world demands Christians follow man's demands and not God's commands. Even within the Church world the demands of man collide with God's will and individual Christians or groups of Christians face a choice - Obey God or Man? This is not an easy choice. However, Peter and John and the early disciples showed us how it's to be done. Check out this episode of the Truth Barista. It just might prepare you for times that are a-comin'!

God Rewards Desperate Faith, part 2 - The Gentile Woman.

March 9th, 2018

"Sorry, I wasn't sent to help dogs." You know, we don't really expect words like that to come out of Jesus' mouth...but they did. Here's the quote. "It isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs." (Matthew 15:26) Now if you stop there in the text, it sounds horrible. Okay, even if you read the whole text including Jesus agreeing to help the woman, it sounds terrible. BUT if you learn the context and take the language and God's plan into account, this is a profound story of mercy and compassion, one that should encourage us to reach out with a desperate faith that God rewards!

God Rewards Desperate Faith, part 1 - The Bleeding Woman.

March 2nd, 2018

Yes, Jesus loves and responds to people who trust Him. But the Bible also shows that Jesus' most powerful miracles came to those who desperately reached out to Him, even if it meant violating "decorum" or "politeness" or any other religious way of seeking Him. Take a listen to this episode, especially if you're at a place of desperation! A woman who has been bleeding for TWELVE YEARS took an enormous risk and reached out to touch Jesus' garment, trusting that she would get healed. The how and why are FASCINATING, but the fact that Jesus responded to her desperate situation takes it to a whole other level! Don't give up hope. Be desperate in your pursuit of God!
